Help Lily Build A Children’s Library in Ivory Coast, West Africa

Since our mother passed away 14 years ago, my sisters and I have had a dream of building a library in her honor and memory. Our mom did not know how to read, but she never let that prevent her from following her dreams. Mom was a fighter and a perfect example of perseverance; she would not allow that “handicap” to hinder her. She raised 11 children, opened a restaurant, and did so much for her family and community. My mother built a legacy for her children and grandchildren. She was a hard working woman who taught us that you can achieve anything you want in life. Your success is based upon who you are, not on what you have.

We want to build a library/literacy center with computers where kids can come and be inspired to love reading and learning. Our country, the Ivory Coast, does not have places where children can spend the day reading and having fun while doing it. Our center will be at no cost to the children. But in order for us to start this project, we need help from friends and family.

I (Lily) have been volunteering for a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide business attire to unemployed men and women who are going back into the workforce. These individuals cannot afford to purchase the proper clothes. This non-profit sells quality second-hand clothing, and all profit goes toward the cause of helping disadvantaged adults who need to return to work. We would like to follow this model and sell quality second-hand clothing for children, using the proceeds to purchase books and computers for the library/center. Educational books will also be gratefully accepted for children who cannot afford them. We would like to have programs to teach children and their parents how to read and write.

Since we have been talking about this project, many friends have already donated books and clothing toward the future store. We need monetary contributions as well in order to register the project as a 503(c) non-profit organization, to ship books and clothing, and to find a space big enough for the library and clothing store. Initially, we need at least $10,000. We are hoping that the library/center will be able to later sustain itself with the help of the proceeds from the clothing store.

This project is so dear to our hearts. We are extremely grateful and any contribution you can make.

Let’s change a child’s future together, one book at a time! Help spread the word!

Thank you for your support, and God bless you.
